The acronym, K.A.I. stands for Know your limits, Ask a lifeguard and Identify the hazards and is one of our educational pillars we teach regularly through our curriculum.

  • Know your limits: Never go to the ocean alone and always go with a responsible adult. Trust your naʻau (gut feeling) on if youʻre comfortable to go out in the current ocean conditions. When in doubt, donʻt go out!
  • Ask a lifeguard: Lifeguards know the conditions of the beach and are most familiar with any hazards that occur there. Always try to visit beaches that have lifeguards and make sure to look for the lifeguard on duty to assist you. Start by asking, “Is this a good day for me to go in the ocean?”
  • Identify the hazards: Take 10 minutes to check out the environmental conditions like the waves, winds, currents, shorebreak, rocks, surfers and other swimmers that can all serve as potential hazards. Donʻt risk your safety or the safety of others.
